While the experts don't agree on the quality of exercise you'll get from playing active video games, there is plenty of evidence that good exergames can at least get you up off the couch and moving around. This list has some fun exergames that might even inspire you to get more fit.
1. Just Dance 2 (Wii)
Just Dance 2 is an energetic sequel that encourages multi-player gaming. Follow the moves on the screen to get the best score possible. Will you learn how to dance? Maybe not, but you'll get moving and have fun trying. Just Dance 2 also has a "Just Sweat" mode that tracks the energy level you're putting into your routines. It's not the same as using an exercise game, but you probably won't feel like you're "working out," either.
2. We Cheer 2 (Wii)
Whether you've always wanted to be a cheerleader, or you're just looking for a fun way to get moving, We Cheer 2 is a great option. There are plenty of customizations and unlockables, and exercise mode is a playful way to get your workout in. Of course, just following the cheer routines is a workout by itself. Much like other Wii-mote games, this gives you only as much of a workout as you choose to put into it.
3. Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party 3
Dance Dance Revolution is one of the games that kicked off the exergaming phenomenon, so it's great to see that they're continuing to enhance it over time. This is more of a rhythm game than a dance game. You'll need to step on the appropriate squares on the mat controller in time with the game's rhythm. And don't expect a true workout until you're past the basic levels.
4. Active Life: Extreme Challenge (Wii)
Active Life: Extreme Challenge uses a mat that is reminiscent of Dance Dance Revolution. The games lead you through a variety of extreme sports on screen as you following along by stepping on/pressing the corresponding spots on the mat. With activities like BMX biking, double-dutch, skateboarding, and base jumping, this game can certainly get your heart rate up. Do be forewarned that the mat is a bit on the small side for an adult.
5. EA Sports Active: More Workouts (Wii)
EA Sports Active definitely shook things up when it came to exergames. With EA Sports Active: More Workouts, you'll use the Wii remote, nunchuck and some specialty accessories (included) to try out sports like squash, water skiing, paddle surfing and cardio boxing. The act of mimicking the movements used in these sports is what gives you such a great workout. EA Sports Active: More Workouts also includes built-in routines, the ability to customize your own routines, and a 6-week challenge that helps you meet your fitness goals.
6. Your Shape Fitness Evolved (Kinect for Xbox 360)
Your Shape Fitness Evolved was one of the first fitness titles available for Kinect for Xbox 360. Controller-free exergames are the wave of the future, no doubt, and this is a good start. It has some fun mini-games and also leads you in core-strengthening sports like yoga and Tai Chi. For those switching from Wii exergames, be forewarned that the Kinect is more exacting. You can't fake your moves.
