Reputable, High Quality and Unique Places to Shop Online
Where to Find Extra-Special Gifts on the Web

By Christy Matte, About.com

Some people are easy to shop for. They want a book, a shirt, or a new video game. You can find the right gift in your local mall or even discount store. For others, you might be looking for something different. Perhaps this person did something particularly nice for you, or you just want something extra special. Maybe you're tired of all of the mass-produced items and want a unique item. These online shops are a great way to find unusual gifts for anyone on your list.

Etsy

Etsy is an online marketplace showcasing a wide variety of artisan items from hats to notecards to jewelry to stuffed animals. Each artist has their own Etsy shop to sell their wares. Much like ebay, Etsy uses a feedback system and I recommend that you check a seller's feedback before you buy. Etsy also has a "conversation" feature, which allows you to start a dialogue with the seller. You can ask about custom orders, the size of an item, or materials used. Etsy is like having a boutique in your home with gorgeous gifts and great prices. I have purchased several things through Etsy shops and have had only positive experiences. The link points to their Gift Guides, which will help you get a sense of the diversity of shops to choose from.

The Wooden Wagon

I have highlighted the Wooden Wagon in the past and it's still a favorite. They have a lovely selection of wooden toys from Europe as well as quality dress-up items. The selection includes blocks, dolls, marble runs, science kits and more. My favorite are the birthday rings and we have made ours a family tradition at our birthday dinners. This is a family-run company and they have excellent customer service.

Think Geek

Do you have a geek in your life? If so, this is the place to find the perfect gift. They have gadgets and gizmos and geeky toys and t's. Imagine a shirt that lights up to reflect the WiFi signal strength? Or a kit that helps you teach your goldfish new tricks? Perhaps your geeky friend could use some R2-D2 speakers. Really, it's geek heaven.

Name Your Tune

Name Your Tune carries personalized music CDs for kids. The songs are catchy and upbeat and have a variety of styles. Most of them will be familiar to your child, so they'll be excited to hear their own name come up in the song. There are over 3500 names available, many of which are ethnic, so there is a good chance you'll find the one you're looking for. They also have a site called Name Your Tune Digital which allows you to purchase blank CDs with a special code to download the music. Email them directly for this option. It's a wonderful gift idea for an expecting family who doesn't know the gender/name of their baby. They'll also do multiple names on one CD, so it's perfect for siblings, especially twins.
