Creative Writing Prompts for Parenting Blogs

Creative Ways to Ditch Writer's Block

By Christy Matte, About.com

Writing a parenting blog is a great way to capture family memories, connect with other parents and just plain vent. But in the hustle of everyday life, sometimes it's hard to come up with something new to write about. Use these creative prompts for inspiration when you're stuck.

  • The funniest thing that happened today
  • How the dog/cat/gerbil got his name
  • My favorite gift from my kids
  • Embarrassing things my kids have said to strangers
  • A day in the life
  • My child’s unique talent
  • Why I decided to become a parent
  • Moments that have ALMOST made me regret my decision to become a parent
  • Can you believe he/she did this?
  • Things I never thought I’d say to another person (My favorite is, “Get your finger out of your sister’s nose!”)
  • How we celebrate X holiday
  • Our family traditions
  • Weird childhood phobias
  • Special events: first step, first words, lost tooth, cool art project, scary trip to the ER
  • Favorites: stuffed animal, “lovey,” food, TV show
  • I feel guilty because… (parenting related, of course!)
  • I just discovered this great product/website/store…

Other ideas:

  • Write a poem about parenting
  • Have your kids do a guest blog
  • Join a blog carnival
  • Write a blog response to something you read in the news or on another blog
  • Share a great project you did with the kids, or game that was a hit
  • Find a quote that speaks to you and blog about it
