Play in the Snow Online
Chill Out While Keeping Warm

By , About.com Guide

Snow has a certain magic, especially when you don't need to drive in it, and you don't need to give up balmy climates to have some fun. Whether you live in a place where it never snows, the weather is too bad to venture outside, or you're just missing the wintry white stuff, here are some fun snow activities you can enjoy without real snow at all.

1. Make Your Own Snow

Whether you live in a place where it doesn't snow, or it's just the wrong time of year, the About.com Guide to Chemistry has a solution. Fake snow!

2. Maple Syrup Taffy

Perhaps you've read about maple syrup taffy or candy in old books. Now you can make your own with a little snow (or shaved ice) and some real maple syrup (get the good stuff!). Yum!

3. Build Your Own Snowman

Building a snowman is one of the best things about winter when you live in a place where it snows. You can build one online with HighlightsKids.com. And there's a bonus - the neighborhood bully won't knock it down!

4. Make a Virtual Paper Snowflake

Paper snowflakes are a great way to decorate for winter, but it is tricky to get them just right. With Make-a-Flake online you can snip away without leaving bits of paper around the house. Even better, if you're not happy with the final result, you can snip some more.

5. Another Virtual Paper Snowflake Creator

This snowflake designer allows you to draw your design rather than snipping out bits. It will be easier for younger kids who have less fine motor control. I created some pretty flakes with this one as well.

6. Virtual Sledding with Line Rider

Line Rider is simple, but addictive. Using the software's pencil tool, draw a line on your screen. When you're done, the virtual sledder will hop on the line for the ride of his life. He keeps sledding until he wipes out. You can add hills, cliffs, and a variety of other elements to your sledding hill to keep things interesting. There are videos created by other Line Rider fans to inspire you.

7. Virtual Fireplace

After all of these chilly activities, what better way to warm up than with a roaring fire? This virtual fireplace includes a crackling fire soundtrack, as well as some cheery Christmas music for ambiance. Don't forget your hot chocolate with marshmallows!
