My Own Leaptop, by Leapfrog, is a fun and entertaining mini-laptop for your 2-4 year old. The toy was ranked Toy of the Year in 2011 by the Toy Industry Association. It gives your child the chance to sit, just like mom and dad, with their own laptop, and learn in the process. My Own Leaptop is a great addition to your family technology lineup, and your kid will be excited to boot up and learn.
What I Love
There are several things that I love (and my little one loves) about the My Own Leaptop. Easy To Use My Own Leaptop is small, lightweight, and easy for my little one to carry around and maneuver. Kids will easily be able to navigate and use the functions of the mini-computer. They can change the activity with a sliding mouse on the right side, just like mom and dad. The voice of Scout the puppy guides them through each activity and tells them what they can do. Quality Educational Content My Own Leaptop has great activities to help your preschooler with their foundational learning. I love the way it uses the child's name (which you enter online and sync), and interacts with your child. It has an interactive alphabet feature that plays audio of each letter as they press the keyboard. They can also explore animal sounds, as well as make music and rhythms. The most educational part is that it is teaching them how to handle and work with a computer. Fun Personal Features Through the online portal, you can personalize the Leaptop, and your child will hear their name when they start up the toy. You can also choose different email greetings for your child, so when they press the email button, Scout will read them the email, and include their name. Downloading the Leaptop Connect software is simple for PC and Mac, and then all you have to do is plug in the USB cable to your home computer (internet connection required) and you will be ready to personalize the experience for your child. Online Support Just like all Leapfrog products, the online support and customer service are great. Any questions you need answered in the process of setting up or using the My Own Leaptop, can be answered on their website. There are so many cool features to this little toy, it's no wonder it's received the reviews and awards that it has. Your child will be excited to have a laptop just like Mom and Dad.
What I Don't Love
If I had my choice, there are a few things that I'd like to see that would really improve the toy. Backlight Since there's no backlight, the My Own Leaptop toy is hard to see in low light. You basically have to have your child in a completely lit area in order to see the screen. This is not that big of a deal, but a little bit of a pain in the evening hours. More Features I realize it's a toy for 2-4 year olds, but even one more game or feature that could help kids interact, like a "find the letter" game or the addition of numbers to the keyboard. This would make it even more appealing for the 4 and 5 year old age group. Longer USB Cable The cable to connect to your computer is extremely short, which makes it difficult to maneuver around and sync up, especially on the back of an Apple computer. It would be nice to have a little more wiggle room when it comes time to download updates and sync the My Own Leaptop. With a few of these changes, the My Own Leaptop would have 5 stars from me. It's a great toy that will keep little ones engaged and learning, all while introducing them to technology that they'll be using throughout their lives.
