Helping Teens and Tweens Handle Cyberbullying and Bullying

When the subject of cyberbullying comes up, a lot of adults brush it off. After all, many of us were victims of bullies as we were growing up. It's easy to suggest that kids "toughen up" and "just deal with it." Unfortunately, cyberbullying is a lot more insidious than the after school playground bullies we are used to. Cyberbullying follows kids wherever they go. From malicious posts on Facebook and other social networking sites to text messages on their phones, cyberbullying victims can't escape their tormentors. It's also important to note that there isn't much of a distinction  between bullies and cyberbullies for most kids. Technology is just one more tool in a bully's arsenal that may include physical violence, spreading rumors, distributing negative pictures/video and rallying other kids against the victim.

The Boston Globe recently published an article about a high school freshman who is dealing with bullying (and cyberbullying) at her school. It clearly demonstrates how harmful and overwhelming it can be for the kids, and how frustrating it is for adults to stop. It's also a reminder to be prepared before this type of situation occurs. For parents, it's important to learn more about cyberbullying and how to protect and support your kids. Kids should also know how to handle cyberbullying situations. It's also essential that parents and educators talk with young people about not becoming part of the problem.
