31 Days of Fun - More Free Rice
If you are a loyal read of this site, you may remember a blog post from November, 2007 that highlighted the Free Rice website. In case you think I'm cheating by highlighting a site I have already mentioned, fear not. Not only has Free Rice grown in rice donations, it has grown with new content! Since it launched in October, 2007, Free Rice has generated donations of more than 60 billion grains of rice through the UN World Food Program. In addition, Free Rice has doubled the rice donation per right answer (from 10 to 20 grains) and added additional quiz topics.
Now you can visit Free Rice to test your skills in Chemistry, Art, Geography, Math and Languages, in addition to English Grammar and Vocabulary. Each right answer still results in a rice donation.
For those of you who, like me, are wondering how much rice it takes to make a meal or feed just one person for a day, I've done a little math. According to the Free Rice website, it takes 400 grams of rice (on average) a day to feed one person two meals as part of a greater diet. With roughly 48 grains in a gram, it will take about 19,200 grains to feed one person for one day. One of the new options on the website allows you to keep a running total of rice grain collected, so you can work towards a specific goal.
This website is wonderful on so many levels. It's a great resource for schools and homeschoolers, besides being a launching point for talking with your children about giving and world hunger. And, if you missed my original post, I will reiterate my original warning: it's highly addictive!
