Precious Moments Heads Online with the Precious Girls Club

Tuesday November 11, 2008

Long-time favorite collectibles Precious Moments now have a new home online. Designed for girls 4-12, the new site will be based on a series of books called the Precious Girls Club. The online Precious Girls Club is a virtual world, where girls can interact, shop and design their own rooms. The Precious Girls Club will differ from other virtual worlds due to the emphasis on faith-based values. Girls can earn special charms for displaying these values in their actions.

Although basic membership in the Club is free, a paid membership is necessary to access advanced features such as the ability to customize a room. Luckily, at $3.95 a month, this is one of the more reasonably priced virtual worlds for kids. Of course, there will be a full line of real world products that come with special codes to unlock online content as well. With these economic times, it will be interesting to see how this site does economically, since it has a slightly smaller demographic appeal than other virtual worlds for kids.

I took a quick look around the Precious Girls Club and wasn't overly wowed. The avatars lack advanced customization and have an expression that is a cross between a smile and a grimace. I was surprised that the avatars look so little like actual Precious Moments figurines. Pages were slow to load and navigation was clumsy. Presumably this is something they'll work on over time.

Despite lacking some of the polish of other virtual worlds, the Precious Girls Club may have success as parents seek out appropriate Internet activities for their daughters. There just might be an audience waiting for more wholesome websites for kids.
