Creativity Express - Art Class for the Whole Family

Wednesday July 23, 2008

I am generally skeptical about "educational" software. Often it amounts to nothing more than animated flash cards and I think that type of activity is better done with a parent. I prefer software that allows for kids (and adults) to think for themselves, make creative choices and follow their own path.

Given that, I was delighted when I had a chance to review Creativity Express by Madcap Logic. Designed for ages 7 and up, Creativity Express is like having a digital art teacher. There are lessons, of course, all of which I found to be fun and engaging. And there are quizzes where you can show off what you have learned in that lesson. But what makes Creativity Express stand above other educational software packages is that it takes you to the next level. Each lesson encourages you to apply what you have learned by creating a piece of art. There are plenty of creative exercises, and many of them include prompts to help you get started if you're stuck.

This is truly one of the best pieces of software for kids and families that I've seen all year. I especially recommend it for homeschooling families, as it is self-paced and has ideas for things kids can do together.

Creativity Express runs on a PC or a Mac. It's available online from Apple (compare prices) or at specialty shops. You can also read my full review of Creativity Express for more info.
