In Search of... the BEST Parent Blogs

Sunday March 16, 2008

Becoming a parent is a bit like being dropped in the middle of the ocean and having to learn how to swim. Sure, there are plenty of books, but they just can't get you through those, "What was I thinking?" moments. It's one of the reasons that parent blogs are so popular. No matter how bad your day was, someone else had it worse. They were up every hour with a colicky baby, their toddler threw up all day long and their teen came home heartbroken from her first crush. Meanwhile, the dog ran away and the roof developed a leak.

I have some great parenting blogs that I'd like to share, but I also want to know what your favorites are. Whether witty or full of drama, please share. I'll put together a list of some of the most consistently excellent blogs (regularly updated with quality/interesting content) and share them with you. Maybe we'll have a vote for the top ten.

Please post your top picks as a comment. Oh, and don't be shy about nominating your own blogging efforts.

*All sites should be primarily focused on the day-to-day "joys" of parenting. No commercial sites, please (I'll be forced to delete commercial posts)!

“MOM – Not Otherwise Specified” is a fantastic blog by a mother raising a son on the autism spectrum. I came across it by chance a year or so ago and have been following it ever since.

I’m also a fan of MOM-NOS. Another special-needs parenting blog I’ve been enjoying a lot lately is Fighting Monsters With Rubber Swords at http://www.schuylersmonsterblog.com/ .

The parenting blog I read the most is probably ParentDish, http://www.parentdish.com/ , which mixes personal experience with parenting news.

And I do have a personal blog at http://mamatude.blogspot.com , though for the past several months I have not been a good little blogger.

There’s nothing out there like http://www.parentingscience.com. It’s all science-based, and takes an evolutionary, psychological and cross-cultural perspective on parenting and kids. Great for parents who want to based decisions on evidence.

I really like breastmilkandcheerios.blogspot.com. She’s hilarious, a good writer and completely realistic about parenting. It’s fun to read and relate to at 3am when baby’s not sleeping. She also has some entries on non-parent related things that are good too.
