Parent Site of the Week: Wondertime

Sunday February 10, 2008

When my son was born, I got subscriptions to a variety of parenting magazines. They talked about potty training, sleeping through the night and temper tantrums. For a couple of months, they were great, but then I got... bored. It started to feel like the same content over and over again. And enter Wondertime Magazine. One of the newest additions to the Disney Publishing family, Wondertime is a breath of fresh air. The stories are intelligent and creative and encourage parents to explore the world with their children. They go beyond just basic parenting skills (feeding, changing diapers, discipline) to becoming a guide for your children as they grow in the world.

So, you may be wondering, "Why is she recommending a magazine on the Family Computing site?" As it happens, Wondertime has a lovely website as well. You can enjoy the humor of day-to-day life with Catherine Newman's "Dalai Mama" blog or Rand Richard Coopers "Dad on a Lark" blog.  There are recipes and some cute printables, too. I especially like the how-to-articles that remind you how to do the fun things you loved as a kid, including building a fort, rules for Red Light, Green Light, and learning how to climb a tree. You may not need someone to teach you how to make a fort, but it's a nice reminder that it really is the simple things that make childhood magic.
