One Laptop per Child

Wednesday September 26, 2007

By now you may have heard of the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project. Their goal is to design an inexpensive laptop ($100 is their target) for distribution to children throughout the world, focusing on regions with limited resources. The result is a cute, yet rugged machine called “XO.”

In an effort to get the product (currently valued at $200 each) into the hands of the children who could most benefit, OLPC has announced a “Give 1 Get 1” promotion beginning on November 12. Purchase a kid-friendly laptop for $399 and a second laptop will be donated to a child in a developing country. These bright green gadgets are loaded with Open Source software, Wi-Fi, video cameras, and even waterproof keyboards and LCD screens.

Take a peek at the OLPC website for more information about the funky XO laptops, as well as some insight into the idealistic mission behind the technology.

Great question. I posted the information because this is a great way for people to purchase an inexpensive laptop for their families. It’s an extra perk that it benefits another child who has much less access to technology. That said, if you’d like to support a child in your own country (we’ve got readers from around the world), you could purchase a laptop and donate it. Then you’re helping out two kids!
